BookFresh

October 10th, 2009

I’m experimenting with making client appointments online with a service called BookFresh. I don’t know how well this will work, but since I need to redesign my website anyway, this seems like a good time to include that option!

Collaborative practice training

September 30th, 2009

On Friday and Saturday I’ll be attending a refresher Collaborative Practice Training. I originally took the training in Rochester, NY in September 2005, but haven’t been able to take any collaborative cases because no one in my area was doing this. Now there are finally some attorneys in the greater Capital District area who will be accepting collaborative cases. There is even a new Collaborative Divorce Association of the Capital District, so I can finally get started with something I’ve wanted to do for a long time.

I was trying to explain collaborative law to the other attorneys in the Family Court conference room today, but I guess I’m not explaining it well because all they could say was “sounds like a sure way to go bankrupt – why would clients pay for this? I’m not interested.” After this training, maybe I’ll do a series of posts here and at my other blawgs to try to explain more effectively what collaborative practice is all about and why it is a good idea both for attorneys and for clients.

Not running

March 1st, 2009

Well, I have decided not to run for the Fulton County Family Court judgeship this year. It was a tough decision and I still wonder if I’m making the right one. I think I’m just not cut out to be a political candidate. I enjoy politics from behind the scenes but I don’t like the spotlight, and a judge is always a judge, even in the supermarket at 3 AM.  That’s not the life that I choose.

To run or not to run?

December 17th, 2008

I’m exploring the possibility of a run for the Fulton County Family Court judgeship in 2009, but I’m not entirely certain yet that running for Family Court Judge is the right thing to do.  I have been practicing law in Family Court throughout my career, and Family Court is the only judgeship that I would ever pursue, but being a judge also means less freedom and flexibility in my life.  I usually enjoy representing clients, both in arguing for the outcomes they want and in trying to develop agreements which would meet their goals and needs, and deciding cases is a very different role from that of an advocate.

Testing, testing!
